This article forgot to mention that Rob Eissler’s bill (HB3), also eliminates ALL computer requirements from the required courses for all three levels of graduation (minimum, recommended, and DAP). Students can graduate high school without even knowing how to type, or use a spreadsheet, word processor, etc. How can they possibly be prepared for the world outside of high school without these basic skills? This is absolutely ridiculous? But he did keep a full year of fine arts in the requirements...

I’ve lived in District 146 for many years and can say that Al Edwards has done little or nothing for this district. Truly he a piece of "furniture" that needs to be tossed out because he serves no purpose other than to collect dust. Time for Al’s swan song. Let’s get a good Democrat to represent the concerns of District 146 in Austin. Is that too much to ask?

"Perry ... left Austin to attend a fundraiser in Houston for Congressman Michael McCaul, where he presented talk show host Rush Limbaugh with an Honorary Texan Award."
Rush Limbaugh was made an honorary Texan! Wasn’t having W as a Texan bad enough?

Well Jane, they are absolutely wrong about Wayne Christian. That is not "whining" that is FACT. Enjoy your rag magazine.

Roland Gutierrez was one of the worst City Councilmembers in San Antonio. He was regularly absent, unprepared, and droned on for hours and hours about nonsense.

You sure got it right with Sen Fraser! I have heard more than once that his colleagues refer to him as "Senator Stupid." Keep up the good work TM and I will continue to buy your mag and get some gift subscriptions for friends and family to make up for the whiners.

Paul Burka and Patricia Kilday Hart must be two of the biggest idiots in the state of Texas(if they even live in Texas). Rep. Wayne Christian is if not the best legislator he is at least in the top 5. The reason you two bozos dislike him is because he is a Christian gentleman and a moral and decent person. People like you want to kick God out of everything and someone like Wayne Christian wants to prmote godly and moral principles. I figured you bozos would do exactly what you did and you did not let me down. As far as me and most of the people in this district we are proud of Wayne Christian and as long as he wants to be our representative then he will have it. I just would like to see him run for Governor one of these days.
Thanks,

Have to chime in and defend Harris, even he knows he wasn’t at his best. The list is otherwise more or less one I could defend. I quibble a bit with Eissler, he may indeed be one of the 10 best but let’s not give him credit for all the education stuff. He held up the Pre-K bill in his committee for a month and voted against it on the floor; the accountability bill that finally passed was more the Senate version than the House.
Agree completely with anything (everything?) bad anyone has to say about Fraser, and yes, Jackson was just a copy of him most of the session. Dewhurst chiding the House for its schedule? Up until the last week the Senate was still adjourning at 5 pm!

GM Ellis says:
I have to join the chorus that putting Freshman members on the furniture list is unfair. Kleinschmidt and Sheffield both did credible jobs, learned from the elder stateman and are both likely to make a bigger splash next session.
I second the idea that Chris Harris had an off session not because of lack of effort or interest but because he had health problems.

"Ruth Jones McClendon, Democrat, San Antonio
For helping to persuade homebuilders to let the Texas Residential Construction Commission die."
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
McClendon was the one that tried to SAVE the commission. Only when it was clear the TRCC was going to die, did she switch sides!
Come on! Give her credit for saving the public school system or for campaign finance reform, but NOT for killing the TRCC!

Interesting list, folks. From this end, though, it looks like in a session about nothing, you found even less on which to comment. Much of your criticism - particularly about the Voter ID flap - reeks of the old vs. the new in Texas politics. Once upon a time, Burka and TM was a clear voice amid the corruption of our state’s government. (Remember tort reform?) Now it seems that you have become part of it, carrying water - and other vital fluids - for legislators who you either fear, want to placate or cotton the favor of. And we thought the Good Old Boy network was a thing of the past! No wonder print is dead!

You can talk about Kino in whatever manner you like, fact is the Disabled Veterans bill would not have gotten anywhere without his persistence. Oh, that Tejano monument happening this session, Kino and Richard Raymond (This may not mean much to you rednecks, but it does to the growing population of hispanics that will be the majority in this State soon). Do your homework and find out who else was on that plane with Kino!!(CALLING YOU OUT BURKA, DO SOME ACTUAL RESEARCH,,,,UNBIASED RESEARCH THAT IS) Travis County DA frustrated with lax ethics laws, Cry me a river. Do something about it. HE BROKE NO LAWS. You use this justification for anything he does. Quit holding grudges.

I agree that Hochberg deserves at least honorable mention. I think I’d give Van de Putte rather than Watson the credit for being the effective progressive leader in the Senate. Eissler is a fine pick but there may be a coming backlash when people realize that the school accountability bill left TAKS and high stakes testing in place. And I don’t get McCall at all.
That’s tough putting freshmen on the furniture list. And Farias and Al Edwards both did a heck of a lot more than Mallory Carraway, who amazingly didn’t make the furniture list.

No fair picking on Kleinschmidt and Sheffield. Freshmen lawmakers are expected to lay low and learn during their first session. Kleinschmidt and Sheffield passed 4 bills each - not bad for first termers.

Paul Edwards says:
Dewhurst is definitely the King of the Worst. He allowed the voter ID to set the tone for the most embarassingly bad session in memory and didn’t have the integrity to save the CHIP bill, when he could have made that happen.
A preening, narcissistic personality disorder if there every was one, especially since he once seemed to have promise.

How can you NOT have Hochberg on the list??? He was far more important and effective this session than either Watson (what a joke) or Senofria. He basically wrote the entire budget for education by himself from the ground up then rolled the Senate in conference.
Villareal did a great job--but he was the student at the feet of the master this session.

I don’t agree with everything but, as usual, your list is generally right on. I thought this was Dewhurst’s worst session. He was ridiculously disengaged, which was best illustrated when he didn’t even know it takes 2/3 to approve a nominee. The rare times that he was involved, he played too many games with members. And he needs to take the blame for Voter ID.

Disagree with Williams as worst. His idea was bad but the GOP senators had to go along with it.
Agree with Fraser to the worst list (maybe even the "worst ever" list) but his buddy Jackson should have come with him
A little harsh to name Harris as furniture when he was sick most of the session.

A great comment by Patti: "A lack of leadership, especially in the Senate." In my opinion, David Dewhurst deserves a permanent place on everyone’s 10 Worst list. Year after year, it seems like he stands for nothing and accomplishes nothing at all. Worse, he is so completely surrounded by sycophants and incompetents that he’s oblivious to that fact.
