You Aren’t Here

A lack of reverence for the Alamo’s sacred battleground has turned much of the iconic site into a place no one remembers.

His Town

When Marty Rathbun became an outspoken defector from the Church of Scientology, a group of filmmakers began to disrupt life in his adopted hometown. But they weren’t counting on the response of his neighbors.

Still Life

Thirty-five years ago Dallas—and the country—was gripped by the tragic story of John McClamrock, a high school football player paralyzed during a violent tackle. But after the newspapers moved on, another story was quietly unfolding, one of courage, perseverance, and a mother’s fierce love.

Across The Line

According to the district attorney in Smith County, this building was the site of the most horrific child sex ring in Texas history. Three of the adults convicted of running it have already been sentenced to life in prison. There’s just one problem: The DA in neighboring Wood County, where the building is located, says nothing happened here at all.

The 50 Greatest Hamburgers In Texas

A gastro-scientific inquiry into the finest burgers in the state that invented the burger, including the Toro (#4), the Stodg (#6), the Miss Hattie (#28), and, in our top slot, a miracle of meat served only on Sundays. No wonder they call it the Lord’s day.

Innocence Lost

Since August 23, 1992, Anthony Graves has been behind bars for the gruesome murder of a family in Somerville. There was no clear motive, no physical evidence connecting him to the crime, and the only witness against him recanted, declaring again and again before his death, in 2000, that Graves didn’t do it. If he didn’t, the truth will come out. Won’t it?

Right Place, Right Time

An exquisite sense of timing—and a good deal of luck—has helped transform Rick Perry from an unknown Democratic state legislator into a swaggering Republican who’s spent more years in the Governor’s Mansion than anyone in Texas history. Is it enough to carry him past Kay Bailey Hutchison and all the way to the White House?

Can someone please explain to me how this trash talking, disrespectful, foul-mouthed, ex-rock star form Michigan came to grace the cover of the official magazine of Texas. I myself was o Ted Nugent fan back in the day and I actually agree with some of his views and I also disagree with some of his views but I whole heartily disagree with his tactics. To tell the President of our United States that he’s a piece of and to tell Hillary Clinton that she might want to "ride one of these into the sunset you worthless ," is inexcuseable and unacceptable and the very epitomy of anti-Texan behavior. We as Texans are taught above all else to be respectful of others whether we agree with them or not. I defend his right to have and share his own opinions but I do not condone his methods or antics. Have we actually ran out of great Texans to right articles about or to put on the cover? If the editors of this great magazine that I love think that that’s the case, then please contact me because I can think of several million that deserve to be there before Ted Nugent.

Teddy, 1)America is made up of immigrants! why would you choose to shoot anyone crossing a fence that is not needed anyway.IF the original Americans had done the same (shoot all coming in) where would you be Teddy! I agree on some issues with you but not on this one...put up that fence next to Canada, oh I’m sorry not the same...why not?

Dear Editor, Thanks for featuring our adopted Texan the Nuge in your July issue. He’s a breath of fresh air that is sometimes lacking in your left leaning magazine. Free thinkers like Ted are thankfully becoming more prevalent in our state (recent polls indicate 18% would consider secession). I’ll make a bet with anyone on your staff that this will be your best month of ’09. I almost couldn’t find a copy in Port Lavaca. They’re going FAST. You should give Ted a big ol’ bear hug. He’s making you lots of money. You should really consider a monthly Nuge article. It would add needed balance. And hey, at least 18% of Texas voters are dying to see freedom in the media. I’ll bet that 18% have not been subscribing to TM.

I support guns. And Liberty. And the constitution. I agree with Nuge on at least 75% of what he believes in but I just don’t think he is really noticed or relevent to most people, you say ’good’, but that only preaches to the current choir. Let’s try to build a bigger choir.

Dear Editor, I have chosen to not have a political party affiliation and have been a Texas Monthly subscriber for over 5 years. I am writing to express my extreme pleasure for your decision to include an interview with Ted Nugent. Mr Dealy comments that Ted "is irrelevant to the vast majority of mainstream political humans" to which I reply damn good thing too. Ted believes in the the Constitution and the rights afforded to Americans. What politician can stand up and support that viewpoint? None that I can name. Please continue to print varying articles and let the naysayers wallow in their ignorance. Absolutely continue my subscription and extend and invitation for Ted to visit my little piece of West Texas anytime. Respectfully, Jeffrey R.Kaye

Dear Editor, I am a Libertarian who has been subscribing to Texas Monthly for 15 years and I am writing to express my boredom at this months issue. Ted Nugent is irrelevant to the vast majority of mainstream political humans. He has done more to create a ’huh, he’s still around’ than anyone since Screech on Saved By The Bell. By putting him on your cover you have reached a new level of indifference. I think that you should put Kinky back on the cover as he is funnier and more relevant to most Texans. Please continue my subscription in force...Hell, it’s only $15 per year for home delivery! Sincerely, David W Dealy
