Curtis Macbeth says:
People tend to react with their guts on issues like this, but I like that Gene used his head. Honestly, I’d rather have a mayor that makes his decisions that way. And BTW, at Phil, I agree 100%

Rollie says:
Locke is trash. No decent person would fire someone because their operations at MD Anderson ran a little late.

seriously says:
Sue and her staff do an amazing job and continued to do so in spite of her cancer treatment. It’s unbelievable that in this day and time, someone would actually fire a person because of health issues.

Ben says:
You don’t fire a person just because they missed a few meetings to get cancer treatments. Gene Locke is a loser.

Is Gene Locke STUPID ?
Just because Walden had cancer doesn’t mean, you have her fired, the same woman who’s working for KBH.
I expect Brown and Parker to hammer at this for RED MEAT to their respective bases and tear Locke for this and if he does make the run-off (very likely, he’s the only African American candidate in the race), he’ll lose in a LANDSLIDE.

Decisions decisions says:
Lack of good judgment is a handicap I do not want the mayor of my city to suffer from. Voting for someone who makes a decision so rash as this would be an absolute mistake.

Don’t get cancer if you work for Gene Locke.

Phil says:
Shame on you Texas Monthly! Your "50 best burgers" story was a real disappointment. I saw "burgers" that looked more like guacamole salad con carne. I don’t question the exquisite presentation of your choices; they probably even tasted good. But so do tacos and they aren’t hamburgers or cheeseburgers either.
And you left out Kincade’s. For that you ought to fry (no pun intended)!
No go back and do it again and this time try to respect one of Texas’ most honored traditions.

Outraged says:
Unbelievable. Sue has done a remarkable job. She raised a ton of money and just because she was out a few days with a personal situation, which clearly did not affect the results, she is let go.
Very dissappointing and shows a real lack of character and compassion.

bellmeade says:
Let me undertand this. She has already raised Locke more money than any of the other candidates. She also did this successfully for Mayors Lanier and Brown. So Locke claims he needs her 24/7, and fires her the week she’s out for a few days after an cancer operation. This, after he hires someone from out of town to run his campaign, the same individual who worked on Sanchez’s multimillion losing governor’s race? With this kind of bad judgement, there won’t be a Mayor Locke in Houston’s future.

SeeingRed says:
Wow. Sue is well-regarded as one of the best--if not the best--fundraiser in the 4th largest city in the country. She has a proven record of success and added to that record by raising more money for Gene than any of the other candidates were able to raise. I’m happy to hear he gave her a huge bonus for this effort. Oh. Wait. WHAT?

Ron says:
Sue used all of her contacts to raise the largest donations to the mayoral race and then the candidate fires her for not being there at his beck and call the day she was in the hospital. What a class act.

Hannah says:
Gene Locke did indeed make a big mistake- not just because Sue is obviously a great fundraiser, but because of the insensitivity of his treatment of her. He lost my vote, period.

TakingSides says:
Although I initially had a difficult choice deciding who I would support in this race, Ms. Walden’s backing of Gene helped me choose. As a woman and as a Houstonian, I take personal offense to this idiotic decision, and I have already begun notifying all of my friends of same. Walden outraised the opposition? Check. Walden did an outstanding job as usual? Check. Emotions aside, when I apply the rational human test to Gene’s decision, he gets a big FAIL. Message to Gene: I’m just not that into you. Any more.

politics says:
I knew politics was hard core but firing Walden after a job well done, and after surgery, is shocking.
