Still Life

Thirty-five years ago Dallas—and the country—was gripped by the tragic story of John McClamrock, a high school football player paralyzed during a violent tackle. But after the newspapers moved on, another story was quietly unfolding, one of courage, perseverance, and a mother’s fierce love.

Across The Line

According to the district attorney in Smith County, this building was the site of the most horrific child sex ring in Texas history. Three of the adults convicted of running it have already been sentenced to life in prison. There’s just one problem: The DA in neighboring Wood County, where the building is located, says nothing happened here at all.

Innocence Lost

Since August 23, 1992, Anthony Graves has been behind bars for the gruesome murder of a family in Somerville. There was no clear motive, no physical evidence connecting him to the crime, and the only witness against him recanted, declaring again and again before his death, in 2000, that Graves didn’t do it. If he didn’t, the truth will come out. Won’t it?

Right Place, Right Time

An exquisite sense of timing—and a good deal of luck—has helped transform Rick Perry from an unknown Democratic state legislator into a swaggering Republican who’s spent more years in the Governor’s Mansion than anyone in Texas history. Is it enough to carry him past Kay Bailey Hutchison and all the way to the White House?

Letter From Fort Worth

Bishop Takes Castle

When clergyman Jack Iker became convinced the Episcopal Church was losing its way, he left—and took the Fort Worth diocese, with almost all its property, with him. Now the church is fighting back, and the stakes couldn’t be higher.

READ YOUR BIBLE AND SEE WHAT IT REALY SAYS, NOT WHAT YOU WANT IT TO SAY. WOMEN SHOULD REMAIN SILENT IN THE CHURCH. AND I AGREE MONTHLY MOOD SHIFTS COULD SEE MASS SUICIDE. MAN LEAVES HIS FATHER AND MOTHER TO BECOME ONE WITH HIS WIFE. SEX IS FOR REPRODUCTION OF THE HUMAN RACE NOT THE PERVERTED DESIRES OF FLESH. WHEN YOU SWAY FROM THE BASIC OUTLINE OF THE DOCTRINE YOU NO LONGER BELONG TO THE FOLLOWERS OF THAT DOCTRINE. COMPROMISE IS THE ROUTE TO HELL.

I am a member of St.Timothys’ in fort worth and my investment in my Church and the beliefs it stands for was not meant to support self serving changes in doctrine that allow women to be more than silent in the church or gays whose same sex activities are the reason for the destruction of sodom and gamorah. When the Episcopal church decided to change, they should have taken a new name; not those of us who remain true to the teachings of Christ, but all properties should remain with those who teach with biblical accuracy.Leaving it with the individual parishes ment to recieve the donation from the donar is the least you can do.

In reponse to Daniel - Some may argue that those in the Episcopal Church that lean on its WASP heritage are conservative.

Daniel says:

The [Episcopal] church is being destroyed, but not by conservative entities. It’s responsible for its own destruction. TEC has leaned on its WASP heritage far too long, and to its great peril. Approximately 5% of the church disappears yearly, due to death, disbelief and displeasure, and still rank and file Episcopalians refuse to evangelize. At the end of the day, this is about Jesus, and not about buildings. And in twenty years, it likely won’t matter; a great many of the current combatants will be in their graves, and TEC will likely be little more than a far-left, zombie cult in fancy dress.

Scott says:
I am not an Episcopalian, but, as a Christian and member of a non-demoninational church, I am taken aback by the quotes attributed to presiding bishop Schori. Do John 14:6 and 6:44 not exist in her Bible? Or, does she merely disregard Scripture when it does not square with her secularist agenda?

Mary says:
To those who support Bishop Iker -- do some more homework. Research the Institute for Religion and Democracy, who are busily about destroying the Episcopal Church and other mainline denomiinations. They and others have misled and duped conservatives by use of wedge issues and the promise of money to poorer provinces from the comparatively more wealthy dioceses in the U.S. If Bishop Iker is so keen on observing the absolute literal interpretation of scripture, let him show himself to be consistent with it. He can sell everything he has to feed the poor, preach a return to slavery or stoning for teenagers who sass their parents. At least that would be more intellectually honest.

C Peet says:

Bishop Iker is not sexist. He believes that scripture forbids women to be ordained into holy orders. He realizes that he could be wrong in that understanding, which is why he has participated in the "Dallas Plan" for years, allowing women from the FW Diocese to be ordained under Bp. Stanton of Dallas. Believing that women should not be ordained does not make him sexist. There is honest disagreement over the scriptures on that point, and we really don’t know for certain what is the correct reading. However, I will say for certain that NOBODY has the "right" to be ordained.

The one bit of unarguable truth in this article: "He runs his diocese with an iron hand and has packed it full of traditionalists who think like he does." Yet Texas Monthly is full of sympathy for this sexist Gay-basher. Barf.

Carol says:
John, You are so right. It is about money and it is TECUSA that is showing their greedy side. Alas, how many of us realize that a large portion of TECUSA’s revenues are from the Federal Govt. ? Yep, close to $2 Million comes from its work to resettle immigrants! How convenient that the amount almost exactly balances the amount poured into lawsuits and that TECUSA balanced its most recent budget by using these funds!! I hope the Texas Supreme Court has the wisdom shown by the South Carolina Supreme Court in their recent decision which among other things said that TECUSA had failed to enact a trust on parishes in this state- PFFT! The Denis Canon was just deflated! Who will triumph in the long term? Bishop Iker and his faithful flock- with or without their buildings!

John says:
Mary, the conflict is about money, alright, but it’s not the Province of the Southern Cone showing its greedy side, but Katherine Schori and her lawyer. Archbishop Veneables has no designs on the assets of the Episcopal Diocese of Fort Worth. That’s just more hogwash being slopped around by the ECUSA loyalist liberals. If you will look for the truth, it will set you free.

Thursday, January 21st, 2010, 8:24 pm
Mary says:
Make no mistake, this entire conflict is strictly about money. What the article did not say, is that the provinces "receiving" these wealthy parishes and dioceses are financially poor. Outside interests have long fomented various wedge arguments, sometimes about doctrine, sometimes about social issues, hoping to obtain eventual control over their wealth. The conservatives have been duped into giving it away, and Bishop Katherine is quite right to do everything possible to stop them. In this, as in most issues -- "follow the money".

C Peet says:
It’s both fascinating and sad that General Convention can say that the sun rises in the west, and with majority vote that becomes their law. But when the Diocese of Ft Worth votes to secede in total conformity with its C&C’s, Ms Sherrod says "no you can’t vote that way". Alice in Wonderland.
