Three Chords and A Station Wagon
The Novas of Dallas. The Livin’ End of Abilene. The Zakary Thaks of Corpus Christi. In 1964 the Beatles inspired a generation of middle-class teens to buy guitars, grow their hair out, and hit the road. The secret history of Texas garage rock.

Great article! Too bad the most inventive over-the-top act of ’em all was missing: Abilene’s legendary comedy/rock act: "Chicken Little and his Fabulous Eggwhites!" With the first ever Elvis impersonator in gold suit! Also chainsaws, mannequens, cream puffs, etc. You never sat too close to the stage-or else! They even went on to make movies. Good times. Great memories!

Dear Texas Monthly - Thanks so much for including The Novas in your wild and crazy TM showcase "Texas Garage Bands" at SXSW 2010 last Saturday night! We had a blast performing to such an enthusiastic crowd and it all went by in a psychedelic blur. Then we all fell back into the street again like we’d been popped out of Alice’s rabbit hole. Austin is a great town so..."don’t go changin"!

I was a fan of Zachary Thaks. As a matter of fact, the garage band I was in covered one of their songs. There are other greats as well back then: The Bad Seeds, Bubble Puppy/Damien, Buckle (Sammy Neely), The Gonks, Sweet Smoke (we opened for them in Victoria one night), Fever Tree. I know there are too many to name them all, but here is a shout out to them!

Hello, is San Antonio not in Texas anymore? Other than mentioning the teen show "Swing Time", the author completely left out: The Chains, The Shackles, Sweet Smoke, Bubble Puppy, and many others. And these are garage bands who had actual hits and got actual air play. He also failed to include Sam Kinsey’s legendary Teen Canteen where many of our regional bands got their first on-stage gigs. As the short-lived lead singer for an even shorter-lived garage band called "The Love Castle" (we played one actual gig for somebody’s mother’s hairdresser’s party), I want SA to get its props, man.

I wish you had mentioned the band Too Smooth. This Austin-based band featured Brian Wooten (now plays guitar for Trace Atkins), Danny Swinney (plays bass guitar for a band in Austin), Jeff Clark, Tom Holden...and some others.
