You Aren’t Here

A lack of reverence for the Alamo’s sacred battleground has turned much of the iconic site into a place no one remembers.

His Town

When Marty Rathbun became an outspoken defector from the Church of Scientology, a group of filmmakers began to disrupt life in his adopted hometown. But they weren’t counting on the response of his neighbors.

Still Life

Thirty-five years ago Dallas—and the country—was gripped by the tragic story of John McClamrock, a high school football player paralyzed during a violent tackle. But after the newspapers moved on, another story was quietly unfolding, one of courage, perseverance, and a mother’s fierce love.

Across The Line

According to the district attorney in Smith County, this building was the site of the most horrific child sex ring in Texas history. Three of the adults convicted of running it have already been sentenced to life in prison. There’s just one problem: The DA in neighboring Wood County, where the building is located, says nothing happened here at all.

The 50 Greatest Hamburgers In Texas

A gastro-scientific inquiry into the finest burgers in the state that invented the burger, including the Toro (#4), the Stodg (#6), the Miss Hattie (#28), and, in our top slot, a miracle of meat served only on Sundays. No wonder they call it the Lord’s day.

Innocence Lost

Since August 23, 1992, Anthony Graves has been behind bars for the gruesome murder of a family in Somerville. There was no clear motive, no physical evidence connecting him to the crime, and the only witness against him recanted, declaring again and again before his death, in 2000, that Graves didn’t do it. If he didn’t, the truth will come out. Won’t it?

Right Place, Right Time

An exquisite sense of timing—and a good deal of luck—has helped transform Rick Perry from an unknown Democratic state legislator into a swaggering Republican who’s spent more years in the Governor’s Mansion than anyone in Texas history. Is it enough to carry him past Kay Bailey Hutchison and all the way to the White House?

Perky: First off, let me say you have no right to blast the Yellow Rose of Texas Republican’s Women Club...those comments were all mine...I simply stated what people in the club stated, and the last time I looked we still lived in a free country where I do have 1st Amendment rights...and if I were you before I posted and made myself look foolish I think I would get my facts straight...the Yellow Rose has 50 members and growing every day...but our 50 members are not sheep...we do not believe every word of what a politician says...I used to listen to DP every day and I believed in him and trusted him to give me good advice on who to vote for but after seeing the way he bashed Van Arsdale and the fact he misrepresented facts for his own self-serving reasons...I had to ask myself..if he woudl do this and claim he is a Christian while doing it...I have to question whether or not to trust him any longer...and although, I would never vote for a democrat ...DP will never get my vote again...I do not represent anyone’s opinion but my own...And when you say Van Arsdale is lacking in moral fiber ...why don’t you be specific Perky ...is it b/c you have only innuenedos, rumors and vicious gossip to support your statements..

Brandon De Hoyos says:
While Republicans like Perky Savage are willing to sit by and let establishment candidates like Senator Patrick and Rep. Fletcher blow a bunch of hot air about ending "business as usual" in Austin, a real choice exists in this election that Texas Monthly failed to mention in the form of Libertarian Joe Spencer. I am voting for Joe Spencer because his principles and policy ideas are steeped in REAL Texas values, whereas Allen Fletcher’s votes and very character speak loudly of self-interest and self-aggrandizing. Take a look at Fletcher (or even Dan Patrick’s) Pact with Texas, and you will see neither one of these elected officials have done even an iota of what was presented to voters. Not. One. Thing. One more thing: Dan Patrick and Allen Fletcher think its enough for a conservative group to call them conservatives ("with a 98 percent record!" they will proclaim), but truth be told, that doesn’t make them effective! Elect Joe Spencer for State Representative, Texas District 130. http://spencerfortexas.com.

Perky Savage says:
My Republican Woman’s club, which had more than 300 members appreciates Representative Fletcher’s conservative votes - representing his district with a moral fiber which is lacking in Van Arsdale". For the Yellow Rose Republican Club, who has all of what - 15 members to blast Representative Allen Fletcher and State Senator Dan Patrick is the biggest joke of the day - or we could say "lie of the day" What poor loosers they are.
