The Briscoe Mystery
The late governor’s time in office is more memorable for what didn’t happen than for what did.

"No one wants to speak ill of the departed, and in truth there is nothing bad to say about Briscoe" but you will and did anyway. Civility alone might have suggested you wait a day or two. Governorship aside, he and his family have been beyond generous to our community and to all of Texas. He made his mark, and will be missed by many.

In typical Texas Monthly fashion, rather than looking at the good side of an outstanding person, you’ve chosen on the day of his funeral to impose your negataive liberal opinion. I hope readers will read the outstanding editorials by Ambassador Bob Krueger and the Waco Tribune to get a truer picture of who Dolph Briscoe really was and what his accomplishments were...it’s a shame there aren’t more great Democrats to follow in his footsteps.

Briscoe Democrat says:
Briscoe did some good things during his 6 years in Austin from pushing for strong ethics and financial disclosure legislation to keeping his campaign promise of no new state taxes. For the record, 6 years was NOT that long and if Briscoe had been accessible to the public, he would have easily won a 3rd term in 1978 and who knows what Texas would have been like with Briscoe in charge for 10 years, but sadly it wasn’t to be.
