I live on the border and have not experienced anything of the sort. The only people talking about spillover violence are the Republican politicians and people living at least 100 miles from the border. I wish someone would report on the violence I’m *supposedly* experiencing.

The idea that the borders are completely safe seems to be very misleading. I was transplanted on the Mexican border from central Texas years ago. It has been quite an eye opening experience. We have experienced things that only residents will understand. Media will not report on occurances due to fear of retaliation. We have lockdowns at our schools due to cartel violence. We have collegues who are kidnapped and never come back. The police don’t follow through because of the overwhelming influence the cartels in Mexico have over them. We have had many friends who have moved to our town from McAllen due to the violence. They recall law enforcement officers being burned alive on ranches the cartels own in McAllen as well as other horrible things that bare no repeating. The wealthy Mexican influx has driven housing prices up 100+%, leaving families that operate on a median income for the area to rent or leave. So my re

The federal government’s mandate is to secure the border. And the American people do not feel the feds have risen to that challenge despite their proven ability to spend billions of dollars. You can counter the charge that the federal government has "done nothing"; however, that’s a bit of a straw man argument. The real charge is that they have not done their job of securing our border.

Thank you for letting the rest of Texas (and hopefully beyond) know what many of us who live near the border have known for years: our borders are safe, Homeland Security is a thriving, government-funded bureaucracy, and the politicized rhetoric of John Cornyn, Jan Brewer, and Kay Bailey Hutchison are serving no other purpose than to raise the decibels on what has become a witless, fear-mongering debate.
