Anthony Fiorillo, 53 Story

(November 2011) Paleontologist

Curtis “Trey” Roark Story

(July 2010) Bingo Caller

Dear Yankee Story

(August 2011) Eight things you ought to know before you start writing stories about Rick Perry. You’re welcome.

Fish Story Story

(September 2010) Eventually, even time spent out on the lake with a cane pole in your hand—the most timeless time of all—runs out.

High on the Hog Story

(August 2011) Hunting from a helicopter isn't as easy as Sarah Palin makes it look.

Hog Wild Slideshow

(August 2011) Scenes from a weekend at Hog School. Photographs by Jody Horton.

Kick Up Your Heels Slideshow

(December 2009) A slide show of images featuring our state’s classic dance halls, from the John T. Floore Country Store, in Helotes, to the Stampede, in Big Spring. Photographs by Jeff Wilson.

Law and Disorder Story

(February 2011) John O’Quinn didn’t just set out to be a lawyer, he set out to be the best (and the richest) lawyer who ever lived. And over the course of a long career, he amassed the astronomical courtroom paydays, outrageous car collection, luxury homes, and list of mortal enemies to prove it. Now, a year after his shocking death, he’s got the bitter, tawdry estate battle too.

Midnight in the Garden of East Texas Story

(January 1998) Marjorie Nugent was the richest widow in an eccentric town full of rich widows. Bernie Tiede was an assistant funeral home director who became her companion. When she disappeared, nobody seemed alarmed. When he confessed to killing her, nobody seemed outraged.

Minor Emergency Story

(August 2011) In the past eighteen months, more than one hundred middle- and high-school-age kids have been arrested for smuggling drugs across the border from Piedras Negras. The numbers may be on the rise—unless one juvenile probation officer has his way.

Shotz Bar & Grill Restaurant

(From June 2009) We went here with low expectations—it’s mainly a bar—but were pleasantly surprised. The beef quesadillas were moist and tasty and the burger with curly fries was excellent. The place filled up quickly with customers who came for the food and also the live music. Seems it’s a hip place to hang out in Mission. Bar.

The Bucket List Story

(March 2010)

The Idealist Story

(January 2003) The late Warren Burnett was the last of his breed: a passionate defender of the little guy—and of the now-radical notion that there's honor in being a trial lawyer.

The Lost Girls Story

(April 2010) For the thousands of women who have been trafficked into Houston and forced to work as prostitutes in the city’s underground sex trade, escaping from captivity may be the easiest part of the nearly impossible road to recovery.

The Ranger Bandit Story

(February 1992) He was the drug kingpin with connections in high places. When he beat a rap, he taunted cops with an ad that said, “Better Luck Next Time.” Steve Benifiel called himself …

True Grit Slideshow

(August 2011) A celebration of our state's cowgirls. Photographs by LeAnn Mueller.
