Austin City Limits (October 2010)
To mark the thirty-fifth anniversary of the longest-running popular music series in American television history (take that, Yo! MTV Raps!), the University of Texas Press has just published a gorgeous coffee-table book, Austin City Limits: 35 Years in Photographs. Featuring more than 250 photos by the show’s longtime photographer, Scott Newton, the book offers intimate portraits of stars such as Beck, Patty Griffin, and Merle Haggard and impossibly kinetic action shots of bands like My Morning Jacket, Arcade Fire, and Flaming Lips. A certain long-haired outlaw country singer who was featured in ACL’s original 1974 pilot episode also shows up, looking as vital at his 2009 appearance as he did back in the day. Thirty-five years? It’s funny how time slips away.
