Discovery (April 2011)

These photographs were taken during the final launch of Discovery, which blasted off at 4:53:24 p.m. (EST) on February 24, 2011. Seven cameras were set up around the launchpad, three within five hundred feet of the ship, with hand-built triggers designed to fire at five frames per second in response to the sound of the rockets igniting (no one is allowed within three miles of the site). These pictures cover a two-minute period, from ignition to the moment just before the orbiter drops its boosters.
