In an ambitious undertaking, the folks behind the Austin locations of the Melting Pot franchise have opened their own place in West Lake Hills, serving a smattering of interesting Mediterranean-inspired plates both small and large. There is a patio to watch the sun set, which--filled with women sipping wine--often looks like a Kathy Womack painting. When we visited, the kitchen was having a love affair with tomatoes. Smoked tomatoes elevated a bowl of steamed mussels. Grilled vegetables on a bed of quinoa made good use of the supergrain, but it was the tomato broth that married the distinctive elements. Sturgeon, unusual in these parts, came lightly seared on a bed of pasta; a tomato fennel sauce--of course--made the dish special. (7/12)
