Even though it’s just north of campus, little Hopfield’s clientele include nearby residents and young professionals who find the brasserie-oriented small-plates menu quite to their liking. Cocktails, like 75 Years in Provence (with elder- flower and bubbles), won’t break the bank at $8 and $9 apiece, leaving wallet space for classics like mussels in white wine broth, a salade niçoise with seared tuna, and ratatouille with aioli. Our wagyu flank steak with herbed butter hit the spot; the meat quality was so good it made us forgive that one side was sadly overcooked and the middle far rarer than ordered (maybe our good mood was helped by the best pommes frites we’ve had in ages). Next time we’re ordering crepes with nutella for dessert. Oddly, the place looks far more like a dowdy English pub than a chic French bistro. Bar.
