What a surprise, to sit under the boughs of Olive & June’s remarkable oak tree and have a meal that was, sadly, unremarkable. Spicy pork meatballs were as satisfying as three Ping-Pong-size orbs can be, though we were mystified by the addition of whole grape tomatoes. Gnudi—the word defines “cloudlike”—made from sweet potato were more like overgrown doughnut holes, and a fennel-and-endive salad had a wan quality to it, despite lovely hits of pomegranate. The bucatini amatriciana had the best flavor, with its spunky tomato sauce and savory bits of guanciale, but the pasta itself felt a little tired. Expectations of Shawn Cirkiel and Justin Rupp are high for good reason. Then again, there was a full moon that night.
