The Abuelo’s chain, which started in Lubbock, is trying a new concept: a fusion taquería. Inside, the hipster vibe—gold and cardinal color scheme, slick white pottery, chrome taco racks—isn’t exactly casual but is the kind of joint we love for lunch or a laid-back weekend dinner. We started with the creamy shrimp chowder, a classic gone south of the border with chiles and Mexican spices. The Texas Cheeseburger taco came with all the makings of a backyard grill party—ground beef, lettuce, tomato, bacon, onions, and pickles on a flour tortilla. Our favorite is the Classic Carnitas taco, the citrusy pork joining forces with corn, salsa, and Jack cheese. (6/13)
