The president of the University of Texas College Republicans wrote an offensive tweet about President Barack Obama, creating a media firestorm. This may seem like a rerun of news from a month ago, but as Dave Doolittle of the Austin American-Statesman reported (after the progressive blog Burnt Orange Report broke the story), the following message came from the account of the newest UT College Republicans president, Cassandra Wright, (@cassienwright) at 2:46 am on Sunday:

Perhaps offensive tweets about President Barack Obama an occupational hazard for this position. In November, then-president Lauren Pierce became an Internet celebrity after responding to the arrest of White House shooting suspect Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez with the following tweet:

“Y’all as tempting as it may be, don’t shoot Obama. We need him to go down in history as the WORST president we’ve EVER had! #2012.”

Pierce eventually apologized—though she initially told the Texas Tribune she wouldn’t—and apparently lost her position as an intern for David Dewhurst’s campaign.

At the time, Gregory J. Krieg of ABC News’s The Note blog spoke to Wright, then the organization’s vice president, who told Krieg, “I don’t really see anything wrong with it.”

Since the story broke, Wright, who became president on December 3, has protected her Twitter account, though her Facebook settings as of Tuesday morning allowed anyone to see her profile photo album, which includes shots of her with Karl Rove and Michelle Malkin.

KVUE in Austin spoke to her grandmother in San Antonio, who told them “this does not sound like her granddaughter.” The station’s story also offered the following insight:

A Republican insider told KVUE that sources close to Cassie Wright believe that she may have gotten the idea for the Tweet from a rap song by an artist called Young Jeezy. His song called “My President is Black” does not mention anything about crack cocaine nor does it say anything about President Obama doing drugs.

(On top of that, as “MH,” a commenter at the Alcalde pointed out, “You can’t even snort crack.”)

The Statesman’s Doolittle also noted that Pierce retweeted Wright’s offending message, but that retweet has since been removed.

What none of the media outlets covering the story seem to have picked up on is that, judging by their respective Twitter streams, both women (and at least one other friend) spent the entire weekend in New Orleans. And of course, the tweet was sent at 2:46 am on Sunday morning, i.e., Saturday night. In New Orleans. So if it’s too much to ask that Pierce and Wright don’t undergo some sort of sensitivity training, perhaps they can remind each other “Friends don’t let friends tweet drunk”?

On Monday night, UT College Republicans spokesman Cesar Villareal emailed a statement to The Daily Texan:

The UT College Republicans neither condones any ‘tweeted’ remarks, nor any statements made by any member of our organization that may be hurtful and lacking in sensitivity. The opinion of our President Wright is that of her own not in keeping with our core values, our standards, and our code of conduct. While some within our organization may not respect the current President, UT College Republicans does respect the office of the President of the United States.
