Have you been to the web page HookemHorns.xxx yet? Don’t worry about clicking—it doesn’t actually exist.

Tuesday was the first day the public could purchase dot-XXX domain names, and as Steve Kolowich of Inside Higher Ed reported, major universities have been snapping up the URLs to protect their trademark rights and public image. Kolowich confirmed that the University of Texas at Austin registered Texassports.xxx and Texasboxoffice.xxx, and Hookemhorns.xxx was already taken, though university officials could not confirm if they bought it.

The Internet Corporation for Names and Numbers (ICANN) created the domain to set adult sites apart from the larger worldwide web, though it has been opposed both by segments of the porn industry (which doesn’t want to be ghettoized) and the American Family Association (which thinks the domain will lead to more porn).

It also invites cyber-squatting, or buying popular domain names with intent to sell the URL at an inflated price. For that reason, as PC Magazine explained in September, there has been a lengthy “sunrise period,” during which dot-XXX domains were made available to both explicit and non-explicit businesses to prevent impersonation. According to Kolowich, more than 80,000 domain names were purchased before Tuesday.

An unscientific search reveals that all the names of Texas’ professional sports teams are locked up, as is Mark Cuban (no surprise there). Other Texas sports-related URL names that have been nabbed up include: Aggies, Baylor Bears, Red Raiders, Horned Frogs, and Houston Cougars. Also unavailable are Willie Nelson, American Airlines, Halliburton, Whole Foods, Dr Pepper, and Big Red (if the last one isn’t in the proper hands, we fear for the soda company).

If you’ve got $60 in your pocket and are feeling mischievous (or protective), Mack Brown, Cormac McCarthy, Lonesome Dove, and Dillon Panthers are there for the taking. As is, ahem, Kinky Friedman.

And if you’re a person whose obsession with state politics borders on the pathologically erotic, Texasredistricting.xxx and Texaslege.xxx are still up for grabs, but Rickperry.xxx and Ronpaul.xxx are taken. So are dot-XXX domains for John Cornyn, Kay Bailey Hutchison, Louie Gohmert, Michael McCaul and several other US Congressmen, which suggests that either the federal government was paying attention to this process or that ICM Registry, the domain manager, already took care of those beforehand.
