“That’s probably a bad term,” Rep. Larry Taylor (R-Friendswood) understated after using the phrase “Jew ’em down” during a Texas Windstorm Insurance Association Hearing last week. On Monday night, Stephen Colbert and The Colbert Report brought Taylor’s gaffe (for which he also formally apologized) to the whole country.

“I think we can all agree that’s probably a bad term,” Colbert said. “I mean, c’mon… this is the 21st Century. If a Republican wants to criticize in a way that’s acceptable, don’t say ‘Jew them down.’ Say ‘Muslim them down.’ Or ‘gay them up.’ Or “Mexican them sideways.'”
