Lights, Camera, Premier!

With the release of the film, Bernie, based on a true-crime story and the subject of executive editor Skip Hollandsworth’s feature, “Midnight in the Garden of East Texas,” in the January 1998 issue, Texas Monthly held special screenings at Highland Park Village Theatre in Dallas, Violet Crown in Austin, and Sundance in Houston. Movie-goers were invited to a sneak peek of the film, enjoy cocktails and popcorn, and hear Skip share anecdotes about the making of the film. At the Austin screening, the film’s director, Richard Linklater, joined Skip in sharing behind-the-scenes-stories with invited guests. Laughter filled the theaters as guests enjoyed the darkly humorous tale starring Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine, and Matthew McConaughey.
