For over 20 years Houston has been host to one of America’s great public art traditions. The Orange Show Art Car Weekend and its anchor event, the Houston Art Car Parade, occupy a unique place in the life of our city and beyond. Each spring, people of every age and from every neighborhood create works of art using the automobile as a vehicle for self-expression. Artists, auto mechanics, stockbrokers, engineers, and students at every level– these are just some of the people who make art cars for this wonderful public event. For three days in May, these fantastic wheeled wonders are featured in special events that draw audiences of more than 250,000 and media from all over the world. By providing a venue for the community to value individual artistic expression, the Houston Art Car Parade brings people together to celebrate what we have in common: our cherished freedom of expression and our drive to use it.
