A takeout order means you won’t get to bask in the lovely hacienda setting, with its original artwork. But you can still dine on Fonda’s locally renowned interior Mexican food. Order this to go: As good as ever was a longtime menu favorite, the appetizer of cordero (lamb) with a dark, deeply flavorful morita salsa; the four small, tender chops would make a light entrée and are a great bargain at $16. The signature chile ancho relleno came stuffed to the brim with chicken and bits of olives and capers alongside a mild cilantro cream sauce. No complaints about the generous order of refried black beans, but the rather listless spinach salad was skimpy on panela cheese and almonds. Best bonus: a gratis large bag of crisp chips and guajillo salsa. Pro tip: Order online and pick up in marked spaces on the parking lot’s west side (that’s left of the entrance).
