Jackson Street BBQ

In the shadow of Minute Maid Park and in the mighty good hands of pitmaster Greg Gatlin and star restaurateurs Bryan Caswell and Bill Floyd, this big red barn is a winner. The lineup includes fan favorites like tender, smoke-ringed brisket and both peppery venison sausage and German-style pork sausage, hot off the grill. The sauce, appropriately served on the side, is meaty and assertive. Sadly for us, we arrived after the barbecued ribs, half-chickens, and crabs were gone. But we did get some chopped yard bird (intended for sandwiches), which was superbly tender and juicy. Of the sides, we found the fried mac and cheese and the coleslaw ordinary but loved the chunky baked beans and the collard greens with pepper-spiked vinegar. (7/15)
