All of the fresh fish on the John Besh menu were long gone due to an after-theater Majestic rush, but the shrimp and grits that were available proved why this place is so popular. Served whole (head, tail, and all) and unshelled, the giant grilled crustaceans in that New Orleans classic (so often underwhelming) gave us a reason to be, to savor, to sigh. Well, so did the tasty, tender hanger steak, the bread basket’s cornbread and biscuit, and the grilled Bandera quail, so we can’t say it’s only N.O. style that shines in this inspired and inspiring menu. The dining room melds southern French with German beer garden and tin-roof charm alongside a bright view over the River Walk. (12/13)
