Schmidt Family Barbecue

Open since October, this place traces its lineage to two famous ancestors, Kreuz Market and Smitty’s. It occupies a shiny building at a busy intersection in the bedroom community of Bee Cave, but don’t let the sparkling interior fool you. The barbecue has plenty of soul. Pitmaster Chad Franks trained under Kreuz’s Roy Perez, and the smoked meats reflect that expert tutelage. You’ll find the shoulder clod, pork ribs, and sausage to be dead ringers for the ones at Kreuz, with a few notable divergences. The brisket is more tender and has a deeper smoke, the pork loin is juicy but boneless, and meaty beef short ribs are used instead of back ribs. The place is still finding its footing, but early indications show solid potential for great barbecue just west of Austin. (1/14)
