Sylvia Mae’s Soul Food

From the looks of the red tin building, with its oversized front porch, you might think Sylvia sells farm equipment, or maybe even farm-fresh vegetables. Turns out Sylvia Mae’s Soul Food is the place to go if your soul or your body is in need of nourishment. We were greeted warmly by Sylvia herself and ushered to a table covered in red-and-white oilcloth. We were thoroughly sustained by smothered pork chops, mixed greens (did we detect a hint of bacon grease?), purple hulled peas, and fried hot-water corn bread. We washed it all down with a glass of sweet iced tea and celebrated our good fortune with a bowl of the best peach cobbler south of Oklahoma. We thought we might be important when our waiter asked to take our photo for FaceBook, but we quickly realized it was a request made of every SMSF diner, to be posted later along with a “thanks for stopping by.” (5/15)
