BLUES CLUES Once in a blue moon, a blue-ribbon month like this comes along. And your true-blue friends at this magazine will talk till they’re blue in the face if that’s what it takes for you to notice. Sensing a theme? Yes, March is a blues-filled 31 days, so between frolics through bluebonnet patches and time spent with dishes of Blue Bell ice cream, be sure to pencil in these blue-chippers. For music lovers, San Antonio’s Little Carver Civic Center presents two vocalists, one guitar, and an evening titled Flamenco Blues on the 12th, while the Abraham Chavez Theatre, in El Paso, hosts the Orange Kellin-led New Orleans Blue Serenaders on the 21st. Plus, hundreds of acts invade the Capitol City the 17th through the 21st for the South by Southwest Music Conference and Festival, including Ruthie Foster. For the more visually inclined, Bessie Smith: Empress of the Blues opens on the 19th at the Jubilee Theatre, in Fort Worth, and It Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues begins its run at Austin’s Zachary Scott Theatre on the 27th. The South by Southwest Film Conference and Festival, which takes place in Austin the 12th through the 20th, will feature Welcome to Antone’s, a full-length documentary about Clifford Antone and his famed blues club. And just for kicks, the Dallas Stars face off against the St. Louis Blues at the American Airlines Center on the 20th. Who says the blues are a downer?
