NUMBER ONE FAN Some favor the celebrities of the big screen, others bow at the altars of superstar athletes. We, however, prefer master wordsmiths. Luckily for us, this month offers plenty of reasons to break out the Sharpie. Former first couple George and Barbara Bush host heavyweights Michael Beschloss, Christopher Buckley, Susan Orlean, and Ronan Tynan November 3 for a Celebration of Reading at the Meyerson Symphony Center, in Dallas. On November 6-9 Dave Barry, Amy Tan, Scott Turow, Shelby Hearon, Elmer Kelton, and many others will be on hand at the Texas Book Festival, in Austin, for signings, readings, and lots of pointers. Houston gets in on the action November 10, when acclaimed poets Sharon Olds and Galway Kinnell visit the Bayou City for the Inprint Brown Reading Series. And on November 11, Big D opens its arms to another big name: Tom Clancy. The architect behind such thrillers as The Hunt for Red October and Clear and Present Danger will be speaking at SMU’s Willis M. Tate Distinguished Lecture Series.
