Everyone knows about Tex-Mex, but Orlando’s distinctive “Tex-Italian” fare—queso mixed with Alfredo sauce, tortellini with habanero sauce—has brought it more than fifty years of success in Lubbock. The eatery wields green chiles like no other restaurant in town, which is why we recommend the green chile chicken pizza or the green chile chicken linguini. The Cheeseburger in Paradise, once voted number ten of this magazine’s fifty greatest burgers in Texas, is also a favorite. We haven’t had much luck with any of the soups, but the traditional antipasti salad is excellent if you’re wanting something on the lighter side. Suitable for both intimate dinners and large gatherings, Orlando’s manages to nestle everyone into its multiple dining rooms, each one themed in the same unapologetically raucous rustic-Italian style.
