The producer Elizabeth Avellán launched her career with El Mariachi, the independent movie Robert Rodriguez made for $7,000 in 1992. Now she’s one of Hollywood’s leading filmmakers, with credits ranging from Spy Kids to Grindhouse. And she has mostly done it outside Hollywood, running Troublemaker Studios in Austin with Rodriguez, to whom she was married for sixteen years until they separated in 2006 .
