The central principle of depth psychology: What you see is a compensation for what you don’t see. Loving this state, I remain perplexed as to why people think we are so complete. This, surely, is a compensation for insecurity from the reality that the world is far bigger, more complex than we. So we must tell our children, and model with progressive humility, that we have much more to learn from others than we have to congratulate among ourselves. Until then Texas will not keep pace with the modern world and will fall further behind than it already is.
