Tubing, Kid-Friendly

You can’t do any boating of note here, but sometimes a river trip need only be a trip to a river. If you’re looking for a nice out-of-the-way Hill Country spot to cool off in, this gem, twenty minutes from the site of the Kerrville Folk Festival, is your answer. (And there’s decent parking to boot.) Tall cypresses shade a long pool on the south side of the bridge that’s deep enough for swimming and even snorkeling. From Kerrville, follow Highway 16 south, past the turnoff to Kinky Friedman’s Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch, and turn right on FM 2107. From there, you’re looking for the third river crossing, which is easy to spot: As you pass over the second crossing, scenic bluffs rise off to your right and the road makes a jackknife turn to the left. The river passes beneath you just as the road begins to straighten out, which is your cue to park and get wet.
