“That’s probably a bad term,” Rep. Larry Taylor (R-Friendswood) understated after using the phrase “Jew ‘em down” during a Texas Windstorm Insurance Association Hearing last week. On Monday night, Stephen Colbert and The Colbert Report brought Taylor’s gaffe (for which he also formally apologized ) to the whole country.
“I think we can all agree that’s probably a bad term,” Colbert said. “I mean, c’mon… this is the 21st Century. If a Republican wants to criticize in a way that’s acceptable, don’t say ‘Jew them down.’ Say ‘Muslim them down.’ Or ‘gay them up.’ Or “Mexican them sideways.’”
