Beneath this heavily trafficked span, the largest urban bat colony in North America makes its home from March through November. Evenings from late July through early September are ideal for witnessing the 1.5 million or so Mexican free-tailed bats as they take off to hunt for their dinner. The east side of the bridge and the grassy area adjacent to the Austin American-Statesman parking lot are popular viewing areas. Bat experts are available to answer questions Thur-Sun through Aug.
