FORT WORTH MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND HISTORY1600 Gendy |
Museums/Galleries |
After a two-year renovation, the kid-friendly museum has finally opened its 166,000-square-foot, $80 million new digs. Designed by the Mexico architecture firm Legorreta + Legorreta, the building is anchored by a 76-foot-tall, glass-paneled Urban Lantern (above) that allows natural light to stream in during the day and beams a beacon of white light into the sky at night. But the museum is, first and foremost, devoted to “interpreting science and the stories of Texas and the Southwest,†as the updated exhibits prove: A sixty-foot-long replica of the official state dinosaur of Texas, Paluxysaurus jonesi, holds court in the DinoLabs; the Nobel Planetarium now boasts live feeds from the Hubble Telescope as well as a digital projection system that displays thousand of stars more clearly than ever before; the new Cattle Raisers Museum, located upstairs, offers both a historical look at the Goodnight-Loving Trail and a guide to modern-day ranching equipment; the history gallery debuts with Let’s Take the Streetcar: Journeying Through Fort Worth’s Past; a dragon head greets kids 8 and younger at the entrance of the Fort Worth Children’s Museum; and the Innovation Studios and Gallery lets tweens, teens, and adults get hands-on with everything from nanotechnology to space travel. Open daily 10–5. Museum: gen adm $14, senior citizens & children 3–12 $10, 2 & under and members free.
