The Texas Treasure Cave and Wild Texas Spring, the newest permanent exhibit, invites kids to spelunk in a re-creation of the Edwards Aquifer and learn how this natural resource provides water for central Texas.

In 2007, the museum unveiled a major revamp of its contemporary art galleries. Aside from a spate of cosmetic improvements, visitors will also be treated to rarely seen gems and new acquisitions, including the stunning sculptural work by San Antonio native Dario Robleto titled The Pause Became Permanence, as well as works by Donald Lipski and Irene Rice Pereira. Plus, after a five-year hiatus, the largest public collection of Greek, Etruscan, and Roman antiquities in Texas are once again on display with the reopening of the galleries that house these treasures.

One of the finest in the country, the zoo is home to exotic animals in naturalistic habitats created by the San Antonio River, limestone cliffs, and towering trees. Highlights include special exhibits of species from Africa and the Amazon and an interactive prairie-dog exhibit that allows visitors to peek at the creatures’ underground tunnels. As part of its conservation effort, the zoo has also founded Gibbon Forest, a home for endangered monkeys, as well as a special area to prepare Attwater’s prairie chickens to eventually be released back into the wild.
