Texas, the energy capital of the world as well as the headquarters of three major airlines, should lead in the development of sustainable, second-generation alternative fuels. I don’t mean the kind that use food sources. Earlier this year Continental worked with Boeing, GE Aviation/CFM International, and Honeywell’s UOP to demonstrate the use of sustainable biofuel to power a commercial aircraft. The biofuel blend used for our flight was derived from the jatropha plant and from algae and performed great. Surely we can figure out how to grow stuff like this in marketable quantities right here in Texas.
