We should upgrade the current state standards and curriculum with a road map that will prepare all our children for success in higher education. In an era when a college degree is increasingly valuable (it correlates to $1 million more in lifetime career earnings), only 30 percent of our children are earning that degree, and less than 10 percent of underserved children reach that goal. Texans’ expectations and beliefs from pre-K through twelfth grade should focus on providing all children with the academic and character skills necessary for success in college and in life.
