What: A 25-kilowatt solar array on every Texas high school designed and installed by students (properly supervised, of course). Why: (1) to inspire interest in science, technology, and the math of sustainability, (2) to demonstrate that we know how to use what God gave us in abundance: sunshine and smart kids, (3) polysilicon is cheap for the moment. The math: 1,500 high schools x $200,000 = $300 million. Funding source: an appropriate local match and a distributed generation incentive program, similar to the successful energy efficiency incentive programs administered by local utilities. Deadline (every project needs one): August 2010.
