• SBC COMMUNICATIONS, SAN ANTONIO, $20 MILLION $20 million to Texas Tech University, in Lubbock, to help pay for the renovation of Jones Stadium, where the Red Raiders have played football since 1947. The gift—the largest in the university’s history—will be used to add more restrooms, build new concession areas, and improve facilities for the handicapped.

• AMERICAN AIRLINES, FORT WORTH, $1 MILLION Air travel valued at $1 million to Southern Methodist University, in Dallas, to be used by MBA students in the Cox School of Business’ new Global Leadership Program, speakers in the Willis M. Tate Distinguished Lecture Series, and SMU President’s Scholars, who study abroad.

• GTE CORPORATION, IRVING, $550,000 $550,000 to the National Urban League, in New York City, to expand its nationwide Digital Campus program to nine new cities, including Dallas, Seattle, and St. Petersburg, Florida. The program, a system of technology learning centers, aims to increase access to computers and to promote computer literacy in minority communities.
