Ruben Rodriguez has made Austin a tastier place. Now it’s time for Austin to pay him back. Ruben is the chef behind wonderful, funky Evita’s Botanitas, and he has a brain tumor. To make matters worse, he does not have insurance, but he does have mounting medical bills. His Austin friends have put together a benefit, to be held at Antone’s (215 W. 5th) on Tuesday, May 12, from 6 p.m. to midnight. It’s going to be quite the party, because a lot of Austin musicians are FOR (Friends of Ruben). The musical lineup so far includes Leeann Atherton, Sunset Valley Boys, Zydeco Blanco, Texana Dames, Steven Fromzholz, Gurf Morlix, Larry Lange & His Lonely Knights, and the Blue Tuesday Band (with a very special guest). Sound like fun? You can get a ticket in advance for $15 at www.frontgatetickets.com. Or you can pay $20 at the door. If you just want to make a donation,  send a check to the Ruben Rodriguez Medical Fund, 6400 S. 1st, Suite B, Austin 78745 (that’s Evita’s Botanitas’ address). By the way, great food will be available too: Ruben has insisted on doing an appetizer buffet, and there wil be flan from Marta Guzman, the flan queen. Silent auction, too. For more information, contact Virgina Wood (478-7650, or at food@austinchronicle.com; she’s the Austin Chron food editor and is honcho-ing the  event.
