Behind the Lines: The Art of Texas Monthly

February 1 - December 8, 2023 — San Marcos

With a goal to raise Texas culture and politics to the level of New York and California, Texas Monthly debuted in 1973. Despite doubts, its acclaimed longform articles, insightful deep dives into the nuances of Texas politics, and the celebration of what makes Texas unique, the magazine became an overwhelming success.

While known as a writer’s magazine, Texas Monthly‘s Art Department has been equally groundbreaking, shaping the way that we see Texas. The Wittliff Collections’ exhibition showcases Texas Monthly‘s art production over the past fifty years, highlighting original artwork, archival photographs, and portrait photography. It’s a nod to the editor’s column that allowed readers a glimpse of the editorial process, and you can start exploring it now until December 8, 2023.
