Texas Monthly: The Edge of Texas

November 10 - November 11, 2017

Presented by VisitDallas

The Edge of Texas is Texas Monthly’s weekend-long exploration of people, ideas, and subjects shaping the future of Texas and the world.

General ticket sale opens at 10 A.M. on August 17, 2017.

The opening celebration will feature pop-up lounges created exclusively for The Edge of Texas by the state’s leading creative entities, visual artists, and style innovators like Sheila Youngblood, owner of Rancho Pillow, a wonderland retreat in Round Top, Tx. These spaces will be paired with cuisine by some of our state’s most innovative chefs including Dallas Executive Chef Junior Borges of The Joule and haute couture chocolates by Maggie Louise Confections. Attendees can dance to the sounds of the Austin-based Latin DJ collective known as Peligrosa surrounded by the optics of San Antonio-based artist Cruz Ortiz.

Explore topics on the edge with exciting programming that will consist of a range of live interviews, exploratory discussion, and immersive experiences on subjects central to the state of Texas, its future, and its place in the world. These sessions will be hosted by Texas Monthly editors, and attendees will be able to choose which sessions they want to experience. Sample topics include:

Texas is known for its songwriters. Meet the young troubadours who will write the next generation of iconic tunes. Learn about the anatomy of a song, how songwriting is taught, and get an exclusive preview of the future of Texas music, featuring live performances by some of all-star songwriters of Texas Songwriter U, alongside singer/songwriter Jack Ingram. Featuring: Jack Ingram and all-stars from Texas Songwriters U interviewed by Writer-at-large Andy Langer.

For almost forty years, Kerry Max Cook did everything to clear his name after being convicted of a horrifying murder in Tyler. So when he was finally exonerated, why did he ask for his conviction back? This session will allow the audience to experience Cook’s sweeping saga and engage with the questions of how to improve our justice system through a mix of storytelling devices, from narration to interview to video. Featuring Kerry Max Cook interviewed by Executive Editor Michael Hall.

Sixty-two year old Richard Turner of San Antonio is renowned as one of the world’s greatest card magicians, and the subject of a forthcoming documentary DEALT. He’s also blind. See Turner perform his incredible act, then stay for audience Q&A focused on how Turner manages to push the boundaries of performance art without the benefit of sight. Featuring master card shark Richard Turner interviewed by Editor in Chief Tim Taliaferro.

What’s the greatest Texas film ever made? What’s the greatest being made now? Who’s the greatest Texas novelist ever? Who’s Texas’s top scribe today? What’s the greatest Texas scandal, and the greatest song? And what other seminal cultural figures are shaping our understanding of the state moving forward? Join us for an experience that’s part debate, part trivia, and part game show exploring the best of the best in Texas culture, past and future. Featuring Guest Writers, Directors, and Musicians interviewed by Executive Editors Skip Hollandsworth and Michael Hall. Audience participation required!

The sixties were a turbulent decade for the city of Dallas, including bearing the stigma as the location of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination. But the1960 expansion Dallas Cowboys began paving the way to become one of the most popular teams in the world, and it started with a group of players and coaches who would help define a city’s image and identity. First Cowboys is a documentary currently in production, telling the story of Dallas in the 1960s through the eyes of the players of its crown jewel – the Dallas Cowboys – and how the legacy of that time shapes the city’s sports world today. Features: Filmmaker Michael Meredith, son of legendary Cowboys great Don Meredith, and Cowboys teammates including four-time All-Pro offensive lineman Ralph Neely, interviewed by Editor-at-large Michael Hoinski.

Texas is a hotbed of experimentation when it comes to making beer. Craft brewers abound, and with all the new beers to try it can get overwhelming. Take a guided tasting tour of the booming Texas beer landscape with three brewers who are masters of their craft. Featuring Texas brewers interviewed by Contributor Aaron Chamberlain.

For the weekend’s grand finale, join us at the historic Longhorn Ballroom where Texas Monthly will re-imagine the Texas frontier at a celebration in this newly restored, iconic music venue. The evening will include innovative tent lounges styled by Texas creatives and artists including San Antonio’s Cruz Ortiz, a futuristic campfire, a headlining concert, and live-fire cooking led by chef Mathew Peters, the first American winner of the Bocuse d’Or.
