Go Mural. Get your bearings and a sense of place, start with Stylle Read’s first of several Alpine murals, Big Brewster, which adorns the side of the Kiowa Gallery and tells many local stories with area notables, citing pioneering visionaries such as Everett Townsend who spearheaded the creation of Big Bend National Park, and celebs such as Dan Blocker, a Sul Ross college student and football player who became better known as Hoss Cartwright on television’s “Bonanza” series. Read also directed the adjacent Mexican Calendar Art mural which was painted in a week as a community project. Murals are everywhere, including Read murals on the north side and south side of the Reata Restaurant, the Wool & Mohair building (on the south side of the tracks, near the train depot), the Crystal Bar and the Best Western Alpine Classic Inn. An additional mural can be found at the Barton Warnock Science building at Sul Ross, and there’s also a WPA mural inside the “old post office” county offices at 6th and Avenue E.
Alpine’s artistic side goes into full flaunt every November with Artwalk, the town’s big weekend art bash. The folks who organize that successful event are also the driving force behind many of the murals mentioned above.
