Ahead of President Barack Obama’s State of the Union speech, Karl Rove appeared on Sean Hannity’s program Monday and (sort of) proposed that America drink every time Obama mentioned the phrase “middle class.”

“What he is going to do tomorrow night? He is going to [use the phrase] middle-class—until you about want to get sick the next time he says it—in fact, please let’s not having drinking games based around the phrase middle-class—or we’re going to have a lot of drunk people in America tomorrow night,” Rove said, according to NewsMax.

Wonkette‘s Kirsten Boyd Johnson was not impressed with Rove’s rules or reason:

Here is Karl Rove’s State of the Union drinking game, which has only one rule: the middle class makes Karl Rove want to puke when he hears it mentioned. The middle class makes Karl Rove so sick he can even skip the drinking and go right to the vomiting. “That doesn’t sound like much of a drinking game,” you might say, because it isn’t. Karl Rove must throw the worst parties in America.

Well, as anyone who watched the speech now knows, he was wrong and Johnson was right; it was a terrible drinking game. During Obama’s 64-minute, 6,959-word speech, the president only uttered the phase “middle class” three times (one more mention than Rove himself on Hannity):

At the end of World War II, when another generation of heroes returned home from combat, they built the strongest economy and middle class the world has ever known. … Extend the tuition tax credit we started that saves middle-class families thousands of dollars. … Right now, because of loopholes and shelters in the tax code, a quarter of all millionaires pay lower tax rates than millions of middle-class households. Right now, Warren Buffett pays a lower tax rate than his secretary.

If we’re assuming a shot for every phrase, this drinking game would have given a 150-pound man a blood alcohol content of .06. But If Rove’s game had included every mention of “hard work” or “hardworking,” America would have been under the table, as Obama used those constructions six times. (Taken over 64 minutes, nine shots would give the same 150-pound man a BAC of .225.) Read the full text of the speech at Politico.
