Athens has the charm of a small southern town while still retaining many of the qualities of a larger city. With Dallas and Tyler only a short drive away, we’re the perfect spot to live, work, and play for those who want the benefits of a smaller city, but easy access to larger metro areas.
From the great outdoors to burgers and brews, Athens has fun for the whole family.
With a variety of family-friendly destinations like the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center, East Texas Arboretum and Botanical Society, Cain Center, Lake Athens, Henderson County Regional Fair Park Complex, and more, you’re sure to embark on an activity that will satisfy the entire family!
Wine and craft beer lovers will enjoy four local wineries in and around Athens and a craft brewery in the heart of downtown Athens. Downtown Athens offers shopping, art galleries, an e-gaming café, Texan Theater, and more. Check out our local, cultural resources and plan your weekend stay with family and friends.
The best time to visit Athens is during Athens Old Fiddlers Reunion that always happens on the last weekend in May. During the weekend, we shut down two sides of our historic square and make it a weekend to remember! Over the years, the Fiddlers Reunion has turned into a two-day long festival with a carnival, street dances, live music, vendors, and the longest running fiddle competition in the state of Texas. After all, if you’re gonna play in Texas, you gotta have a fiddle in the band!
