Connect with nature, activate your senses, and positively shift your mindset in Mineral Wells where experiences in nature are in abundance. With three state parks, four lakes, the Brazos River, miles of hiking and biking trails, and the picturesque Palo Pinto Mountains, you can disconnect from the world and reconnect with yourself in the unhurried rhythms of nature.
For the More Adventurous
Find your way along more than 30 miles of hiking and biking trails. With the rocky sandstone terrain of Lake Mineral Wells State Park and Texas Frontier Trails, you’re sure to work up a sweat whether on foot or a bike. From easy, crushed-rock trails to challenging, gravity-defying climbs and everything in between, there are lots of options sure to please hikers and cyclists.
Or try your hand at the only natural rock-climbing area in North Texas found in Penitentiary Hollow at Lake Mineral Wells State Park. Enjoy top-roping and rappelling along with some sport-bolted routes from the 20’-40’ sandstone walls. While in the canyon, enjoy the magical maze of rocks and the majestic cedar elm trees. One tree, in particular, captivates and inspires even the novice photographer to click away.
Ready to Get on the Water?
If you’re looking for a slower, cooler pace enjoy canoeing, kayaking, paddle-boarding, and fishing at one of our lakes. Or grab a tube and meander down the mighty Brazos River. Pack a tent and set out on a 1-, 2-, or 4-day trip where you’ll see the most scenic part of the river that Texas has to offer.
Looking for a Little Ecotherapy?
Removed from the noise of urban life and surrounded by our stunning landscapes, it’s easy to immerse yourself in nature. Stroll the meditation gardens at the National Vietnam War Museum or the prayer gardens at Our Lady of Lourdes. Or wander through the beautiful Clark Gardens Botanical Park with soothing water features and serene walkways.
Quiet your mind and find your center as you walk the labyrinths at the National Vietnam War Museum. Or try forest bathing or grounding in the wooded acres of Texas Frontier Trails: Heritage Park or Lake Mineral Wells State Park.
Excite your senses by trying Crazy Water, our all-natural mineral water that has been making people feel good since 1881. You can sample all four levels of the water or try our sodas and coffees made from the water that made us famous. Then head over to the Crazy Bath House for a soak in the mineral baths that once earned us the title of “America’s Great Health Resort.”
Inspired by Color and Creativity?
Take a walk through downtown Mineral Wells and explore more than 20 murals. You’ll find some fantastic old advertising murals that were discovered while restoring our historic buildings, as well as many new murals created by local artists. Some are even interactive—if you have the imagination to see them. A few of our murals will even lead you into some of our favorite drink stops. Pop in for a sip and some conversation with the locals.
Explore the Ancient Seabed
If you have even the mildest interest in fossils, the Mineral Wells Fossil Park should be on your must-stop list. This free park is open year-round and once you know what you’re looking for, you’re guaranteed to find fossils. Lots of them. And the best part—you get to keep what you find as long as you promise not to sell them.
You won’t even need any special tools, or tools at all. The sea-life remnants make their way to the surface naturally with the help of the wind and rain. But you will need a hat and plenty of water as there is no shade and it can get quite hot.
Admire the Texas Night Sky
Gazing into the star-filled night sky with wide-eyed wonder and curiosity can quickly restore a sense of calm and peace. Our state parks offer some wonderful spaces to take in the star-scapes and even offer the occasional guided stargazing opportunities where they’ll lead you on a “walk around the sky” and offer you a closer look at the celestial bodies with their telescopes.
With miles and miles of nature just waiting to be discovered, Mineral Wells is a must-see Texas town that will leave you more rejuvenated than when you came.
