Al Carbon Pollos Asados

The smoke-scrubbing chimneys atop the food truck kitchen are the giveaway: this chicken is charred, crispy, and chile-fied. This location (one of three, including a food truck at Goliad Road) is at the near-downtown corner of Culebra and I-10 in an industrial neighborhood (you won’t have trouble finding the restaurant, only a parking space). Inside, the crowds are elbow to elbow—families, friends, work crews, all packed around Formica tables piled high with food. Need we say that pollo asado is the main thing? And what a grilled chicken it is: notably moist and juicy and served with a sweet and smoky grilled half onion, just the right amount of green chile to give it a bit of pop, and a stack of corn tortillas. Family-size platters with an assortment of meats are also popular, as are the short ribs, a little chewy but with plenty of flavor. Add charro beans, Mexican rice with a hit of comino, good fresh guac, and you have a dinner well worth the short wait for a table (or a takeout bag of goodies to carry to a nearby Woodlawn Lake picnic table).
