It’s not easy being a “clean” menu: bereft of GMOs, eschewing preservatives, ever eager for organic veggies, and strangely wild about game. It’s, well, nicely virtuous. The signature monthly cocktails are clever and often feature house-squeezed juices. The house “ceviche” has never seen a wave, but the charming mixed marriage of avocado, hearts of palm, and chipotle makes a splash regardless. The Anise Burger with salmon features a rich cashew-chipotle crema and is layered with arugula and onion. Toothsome artichoke fritters are marvelous panko-draped morsels resolutely ready to be dredged in rémoulade. Peas on Earth offers hearty soba noodles dressed with tamari sauce, grape tomatoes, and snow and sugar snap peas atop a vivid green English pea puree. Surely clean doesn’t extend to desserts, right? Wrong. Try the ethereal sesame almond pear cake bracketed with (coconut) milk ice cream.
