In 1981 this Tex-Mex cafe opened in Inwood Village and quickly became a favorite for the Park Cities-Preston Hollow crowd. The decor, in all its rose-tinted glory, was a step up from average, and the menu attracted diners who craved classic Tex-Mex. It changed hands two decades later and eventually closed, in 2013. Now original owner Gilbert Cuellar Jr. has brought it back, in the former El Fenix site, no less, near Greenway Parks. Those who remember the old spot will find a similar vibe, with all the usual combos, platters of sizzling fajitas, and cocktail faves like the hibiscus-infused Rosa Rita. Alas, the kitchen seems less consistent than before; the chips, salsa, classic queso, and fresh tortillas all fully satisfied, but our redfish veracruzana was oversauced and underspiced, and the rice and beans were merely average.
