A fixture in the ever-changing landscape of Dirty Sixth, Chez Nous has seen countless businesses come and go while resolutely staying exactly the same (popcorn ceiling, potted ivies, posters of Gallic scenes). Fresh bread and a giant square of butter prepare lunchtime diners for croque-monsieurs and -madames and made-in-house pâtés. Heartier plates, best with a goblet of French red, include a substantial steak with béarnaise and pommes frites and a nicely done trout meunière served with simple grilled zucchini and ethereal potato puffs. Soups are excellent, like the earthy puree of wild mushrooms, as are the green salads with mustardy vinaigrettes. Since 1982, Chez Nous has been a cocoon of cozy comfort amid all the bars and smoke shops and tacky Texas souvenir vendors.
